Port Melbourne PS rips into diving
Published Fri 06 May 2016
Port Melbourne Primary School students literally dived head-first into an all-new pilot program this week with the unveiling of Diving Victoria’s ‘Let er Rip’ schools initiative.
The program, aimed predominantly at primary schools, sees a diving-specific program integrated into the school’s standard swimming lessons.
Speaking this week at the program launch, Diving Victoria CEO Matthew Duck said it was an exciting day for the sport.
“In a way we’re piggy-backing on something that already exists - the kids are at the pool already; we’re simply giving them an extra experience they wouldn’t ordinarily get to try our great Olympic sport."
Port Melbourne Primary School Principal Peter Martin was buoyant about the new program.
“Most primary schools like ours have a swimming lesson component to their curriculum – we’re simply looking to provide something a bit different and a bit tailored within that.”
“Our kids come here to MSAC for six swimming lessons, and if a couple of those lessons can be focused on deep water safety and working with specialised coaches, that’s a great thing for our school. And the kids have absolutely loved it.”
Although Port Melbourne Primary School is the first to integrate diving into its swimming sessions under this program, Duck does not expect it to be the last.
“Years ago every kid had a chance to go to their local pool and jump off the boards. These days those opportunities are more rare, so ultimately if we can provide that experience to kids across the state, it’s a rewarding exercise.”
“There’s a club to suit everyone – for us it’s just about making sure that those with an interest in the sport know they have ways to join in.”
