Commonwealth Games Trials

The Commonwealth Games Selection Trials were held up on the Gold Coast from 14-17 December. The Victorian team came out in force on Day 1 with James Connor taking 3rd in the Men's 1m event by less than 1 point. Next up was Anabelle Smith with 3m Synchro partner from Rio, WA's Maddison Keeney. They secured the gold medal by over 50 points ahead of Esther Qin and Georgia Sheehan. In the Women's 10m Synchro event AnnaRose Keating teamed up with NSW diver and Olympian Brittany O'Brien to capture the gold. Day 2 brought some challenges. But not for James Connor, who won the Men's 3m event by a mere 5 points over SA's Matthew Carter. In the Women's 10m event, AnnaRose finished 5th, Laura Hingston 6th and Nicole Ng was 11th. On Day 3, James Connor teamed up with Kurtis Mathews to win the Men's 3m Synchro event. In the Women's 1m event, Anabelle finished in 4th position and Naomi Fitzgerald qualified into the final to finish 12th. On the final day of competition, Anabelle Smith dove lights out in the Women's 3m Final to capture the gold ahead of her synchro partner by 12.95pts. A special congratulations to Nick Jeffree from NSW on his 4th place finish in the Men's Platform. Nick has been training in Melbourne with coach Andy Banks.
Diving Australia selectors will have final say on who makes the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast in April. The announcement will be forthcoming.
